Airborne Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
Mine detection is often carried out manually, but can be supported by various appropriate technologies including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). GPR is a well- proven geophysical method that uses radar pulses to image the sub-surface. Traditional GPR units need heavy batteries and sensors which require them to be used in a cradle on fleet services or supported by a vehicle.
Airborne Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
ShadowView and Sterling Geo have jointly developed a lightweight (sub 1kg) GPR unit, which can be carried by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The system can identify subterranean anomalies including unexploded ordnance and utility inspection.
The airborne GPR has undertaken successful trials with MoD and a field ready product is now available which can be deployed immediately.
